DEWALT DW421 2 Amp 5-Inch Orbital Sander with Dust Canister Review

For the price I am very happy. I seem to use it whenever I have a quick project to do, and it usually works fine.

My only real gripe is that the bag leaks quite a bit. Just turning it on will shoot out a little dust, so I have started a process of turning it on over my trash can (so the dust falls into it) then once that initial blast is done, I go on to sand my project.

If I had 20/20 hindsight, I probably would have sprung for the Variable speed Dewalt (DEWALT DW423K), but this has been just fine.

Porter-Cable 15000 5-inch 5-Hole Standard Hook and Loop Replacement Pad for 7334, 7335, and 97355 Sanders Review

I have been using the 7335 sander with this hook and loop pad for years. Some people complain about the holding power, but I use 60 grit discs regularly with no problems (maybe vaccuuming out the pad from time to time would help them). In fact, I just bought my first replacement pad only because a "helper" sanded without a sanding disc and wore off the hooks.
The hook and loop system allows quick changing of sanding discs as well as disc reuse. So you can quickly go from rough to fine sanding on individual pieces, and save the discs for the next job.

For this Price, who would not be skeptical? When I received it at the Shop, I asked an apprentice to sand several door jambs prepping for paint. The Jambs were fairly knicked up and it took a while. When he finished over an hour and a half later, no kidding, the Battery was still strong and job done was excellent. It's a bit stronger and louder than the corded B and D Mouse which is also a favorite. The Mouse is definitely quieter but where noise is not an Issue and a strong sander is needed and you don't want to hassle with a cord, get this one.

Black & Decker BR400 3-Inchx21-Inch Belt Sander Review

This is not a high quality tool, but for someone like me that only uses a belt sander to fix a mistake, it is just fine.I would love to have a bosch, makita or dewalt and those are the sanders I would reccommend for heavy duty use, but I only use mine to strip old or mistake finishes and this tool seems to work just fine.

JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4-Horsepower Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase Review

I purchased this drum sander a week ago.
I am rating the Performax 22x44 Plus Drum Sander with Closed Stand.
The stand is completely assembled in the box.This is the first machine that I have assembled and didn't have any extra bolts or washers.Assembly was exactly as it was supposed to be with everything lining up perfectly.All allen wrenches were provided for assembly.
I only had to tighten the brake pedal.The paint job is wonderful.
The motor assembly is extremely heavy, however, I was able to assemble the entire machine in 20 minutes.
I purchased the optional infeed/outfeed tables and think they are great but should cost less than $100, more like $50. No, they should be included, but are not necessary.

Performance:The motor is unbelievable quiet. No vibration at all. It is hard to tell sometimes if the motor is running it is so quiet. I sanded a 14 inch wide board and the results were amazing.Dust collection is a must and my Delta 1200 CFM pulls 99% of the dust.

I use a 30 AMP service for the drum sander.
Drum alignment was spot on.It was only off by .002 of an inch.No adjustment needed at all!

I give it 4 stars because the mobile base moves inline and does not allow you to easily steer the machine.I also wished the conveyor motor was a little beefier.No problems.I just would like the assurance.The motor adjusts from 0 to 10 fpm.

(Update 12-1-06:I received the "handy" tool to assist with sanding belt changes.I COMPLETELY disagree with the instructions for changing the sandpaper on the drum.It is not necessary to use this tool.I and my family think this way is much better:Attach the paper to both sides, but do NOT tighten it on the motor side as instructed.Simply tighten it by hand on the left side where you have much more room and can do it with your fingers.If you own this tool you will see exactly what I am talking about.It is so easy this way.

I am so happy I received this machine.It was given as an early Father's Day gift.

4/09 Update: If I were looking today for a sander, I would take a hard look at Steel City's dual drum sander. You can put two different grits of paper on the machine and really move things along. The price is so close. You also get two four inch dust ports on it. I would buy it now if I didn't already have the Jet/Performax. honestly

Rockwell RK4245K Vibrafree 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Review

I really wanted to love this sander.Having owned an older model Dewalt sander that was good until the sanding pad would no longer slowly spin, but would just take off and spin madly, I decided it was time to try something new.I noticed Rockwell had been putting out some new products with some promise and decided to try this.
I like how it feels.Solidly built, comfortable.
Dust collection seems good, even better with vacuum attached.
Quiet operation.
Very low vibration.
Nice carry case, except i don't like the limited sand pad storage.

--This thing leaves swirl marks. -- More like "edge lines" from the two inner rings rotating in opposite directions.I know this isn't always a factor when just wanting stock removed before sheet sanding, but its still irritating.The limited suppliers of sanding disks and the swirling leaves me wishing I would have stuck with Dewalt Porter cable Makita, or Milwaukee.Anyhow It's still solidly built, comfortable, and does remove stock well, but I'll just have to use my nice Dewalt 1/4 sheet sander to chase all the lines left by the Rockwell orbital...

Bench Dog 10-035 Bench Cookie Work Grippers, 4-Pack Review

These cookies are just plain awesome and I can't believe that it took this long for a product like this to hit the market.

Use them for elevating your work piece off of the table so you can paint it, use your router on it, whatever you need. The no-slip base works awesomely on pretty much any and all material. Just make sure it's free of saw dust or any loose debris and they'll stay planted.

Rockler sells these as well and I must say that the blue ones they sell are much better looking then these, but obviously function the same (and are the same price).

If you are a serious woodworker, a novice, or even a beginner, these are a must have for anyone. Buy two packs and just go crazy!

Factory-Reconditioned DEWALT DW433KR Heavy-Duty 8 Amp 3-Inch-by-21-Inch Variable Speed Belt Sander Kit with Dust Canister and Case Review

I received the above belt sander and was pleased upon its arrival, however, upon use am very unhappy. The belt does not track properly and comes off the sander, even when using the tracking adjustment to the point it falls out! I contacted DeWalt and they advised taking it in for service as the tension spring is apparently malaligned, what is the point when it shoud have worked to begin with? I will have to take the unit for Warranty Repair, but since I needed it to paint the house, it seems to defeat the purpose.

SHOP FOX W1708 1 HP 12-Inch Disc Sander Review

I received my Shop Fox 12 inch disc sander within 3 days of placing the order with Amazon. The sander arrived without any damage although the box showed some evidence of rough handling but the Styrofoam molded inner packing protected as it was designed. The unit is heavy for its size 73lbs and I'm sure it was work for all the hands that handled this unit before it arrived at my door. I researched 12 inch disc sanders before choosing the Shop Fox. I read dozens of reviews on comparable sanders ie: Delta- Grizzly- Harbor Freight and one or two other off brands. I have to wonder if they don't all come out of the same Chinese factory. The issues I read had to do mostly with tables not being true and the wheel/plate not being true. The differences I've noticed are the motor size with Harbor Freight having a 1-1/2 hp and indicating a 22amp draw for start up (not certain what the running amps draw was or whether it indicated in their manual). I have a 20 amp breaker so I passed that up not being sure if that would be an issue. The Grizzly and Shop Fox are 1 hp 10amp motors. The Delta is 1/2 hp motor(not sure of the amp draw) and smaller table size 17-1/4 x 6-1/4vs 17-1/4 x 8-1/4 for Grizzly and Shop Fox. Cast aluminum tables on Grizzly and Harbor Freight and cast iron on Delta and Shop Fox. I believe they all have a cast aluminum disc. So that is it pretty much. I read a couple of reviews on all of the makes and this issue applies to the Shop Fox unit I received as well. In my initial "check it out" the disc on my unit is not perfectly flat. If I take a piece of wood and put it a hair away from making contact with the disc and then rotate the disc by hand it will at some point make contact suggesting a high spot in the rotation. I read a couple of reviews as I mentioned indicating this finding and one guy stated he measure it at .025 (if I remember correct) of being out of true. I'm not certain how this will effect what I am trying to accomplish which is to get a good glue joint for a scarf joint on guitar necks. I don't thinkfor non critical normal edge or angle sanding this will matter. I plan at some point to evaluate this further. I have a machinist gauge and I will have to peel off the applied disc it came with to get an accurate measurement. I entertained the possibility the high spot might be the sanding disc and not the aluminum disc itself but based on my research I am more suspicious its the disc. My suggestion in closing is think about what your going to do with the machine --if you get a unit with a not perfect disc you can return it, live with it, or take the disc to a machine shop and see if they can true it up for a reasonable cost. Overall the sander should last a long time and is good value ---allot of machine for the money.

Hitachi SV13YB 2 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag Review

This is my third random orbit sander in the last 3-4 years and it replaces a smooth operating but poorly made Porter Cable 333.The positive aspects of the Hitachi are that it is very agressive, has good power, and the dust collection seems to work fine.Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to control when the pad is flat on the sanding surface and tends to veer out of control in whatever direction the orbit takes it.In addition, the top of the sander is very large which makes it uncomfortable to hold and probably adds to the control issue. The Porter Cable clearly led the way in sanding quality and smoothness. All in all, the Hitachi just doesn't provide the blend of aggressiveness and finesse that I desire for my woodworking needs.

DELTA 31-260X 18-Inch-by-36-Inch Drum Sander Review

I have owned an earlier version of this machine for six years and have also had several years experience with the Performax 16/32 and the Jet 22/44 drum sanders.I use these machines for several applications, but mostly for precise sanding of musical instrument parts.

I bought the Delta because it has a moveable cast iron table, which I thought would be much more precise than the Performance and Jet mcahines.I also bought it because of its 18 inch capacity.The machine is well built.Fit and finish is very good.The precision is there, but that's where it ends.

When feeding stock into the sander, it is very difficult to get it started through the infeed pressure bar, which is too tight and is not adjustable.When the stock comes up against the outfeed pressure bar it stops, causing the drum to dig into the stock, ruining glue surfaces or worse, destroying expensive instrument parts at critical thicknesses, unless you physically keep feed pressure on the stock to prevent it.This happens even when removing five or six thousandths of an inch from narrow material.

The motor stalls under loads when it clearly should not.I have experienced stalling when removing fifteen thousandths of an inch from oak, maple, etc 8 inches wide. Wider stock is obviously worse.

Changing sanding strips is difficult to say the least, given the inaccesability of the spring loaded clips that hold them to the drum.

The sander came with an accessory inflatable drum sander attachment, which I installed and imediately removed because its rotation didn't even resemble concentricity with the shaft that drives it. My experience has shown me that I should not have underestimated the durability, strength and precision of the Jet/Performance machines and that I made a mistake when bought the Delta.
I would'nt buy the Delta machine again, at any price.

Replacement conveyor belt for 16" Performax/Ryobi/etc sanders Review

I've always liked my Performax 16/32 except for the conveyor belt.The sandpaper belt was difficult to track, even with the little ceramic inserts, frequently buckled up in places, and tore very early in its life.

This belt arrived at my house within a couple of days after order, went on without any problems, tracks perfectly and works much better in general than the original equipment.

I would consider this to be a mandatory upgrade for any 16/32 owner!

Hitachi SV12SG 1.7 Amp Orbital 1/4 Sheet Sander with Cloth Dust Bag Review

I received this sander as a free bonus for buying the new Hitachi router.Since I didn't really "need" it and it was basically free for me, I can't complain about the price I paid. However, if I were to pay the price listed here I would be pretty mad.Here's why:

Though the sander comes out of the box looking and feeling like a quality machine, I quickly noticed that the one sheet of sandpaper included was of the peel and stick variety (and italready had the dust-collection holes punched in it).I thought this was odd since this sander has the standard paper clamps so you can cut your own 1/4 sheets and attach them without sticky backing.Then it hit me.Though this sander is rated as having one of the most efficient dust collection systems on the market, dust collection only works if the holes are punched through the sandpaper, and the only way to do that effectively is with a sandpaper punch plate made for that particular sander.The kicker is that no such punch plate is included...it is listed as an accessory in the owner's manual.

So, armed with the part number I searched high and low on Amazon and everywhere else I could think of on the web and couldn't find the punch plate.I eventually called Hitachi who gave me an 800 number to call and order the plate.The price of the plate is over $11 and they want $8 more to ship it.For a flat piece of plastic with nibs on it!

After using the sander with the one included sheet of pre-punched sandpaper I can say that this little machine is well built and fairly agressive for a finish sander.It is comfortable in the hand, and has a quality feel to it.

In the end, I hate to bash this tool because of the punch plate issue, but how good is a sander with an excellent dust collection system that you cannot use unless you spend another $19 on a punchplate that should be included in the first place?

The Powermatic 31A Belt/Disc sander makes an impressive addition to any shop that already has a working machine.The unit is sturdy and good looking.The two heavy tables are esily adjusted and the T-miter slots were a nice surprise. It even comes with a small gauge, belt and disc.The belt moves smooth and easily when propelled by hand, and the disc appears true.The belt tension mechanism is quick and accessible. Despite being in the shop for over a month, an assessment of finishing quality has yet to be made. Upon initial start-up, noise and vibration were excessive.The motor overheated, tripping 20 amp breaker.Confirmed the motor was factory wired for 115V.The motor subsequently fails to wind up and cannot drive the belt/disc shaft.
Powermatic was contacted about the defective motor.The Customer Service Representative was polite, but advised that it was Amazon.com's problem, warranted or not.Amazon.com has made a good faith effort to provide a functioning tool. But a new motor was incompatible with the tool power drive and new drive component, likewise, incompatible with said motor.Offered to return everything.Still waiting for instruction on return, repairing original motor or obtaining correct drive components for new motor that will not void warantee. The good folk at Amazon.com appear ill equipped to deal with Powermatic, and Powermatic doesn't want to deal with end user.
Summary:Nice looking tool, doesn't work. Buy a Delta from different source.

My project involved sanding my deck so I could refinish it and I tried just about every brand of sanding belts possible. I first tried Norton's brand with only a couple sanding belts, I wore these out and then tried three different brands that were slightly cheaper in price, not by much though, and found out what is in a name. I went through about 2 to 3 times the number of belts in the same amount of space. I highly recommend Norton brand sanding belts, they may cost a little more but they last a lot longer.... thus saving you time and money in the long run...

Norton 49258 3X 3" x 18" 80 Grit Sanding Belt - 5 Pack Review

I've used my belt sander more than 10 years and have tried so many kinds of sanding belts. Considering many factors this is the best one so far. Price is a little higher than other local brands but it's far worth of spending the extra.
It lasts very long, longer than any other brands, and take the material out real fast. Not sure it's 3 times faster than others as shown in the ad, but I'm sure it's definitely faster. And another good thing is when I do sending for a while(10-20 minutes), most belts get heated up and lose the tightness. As a result, when the belt is hot, almost no material is sanded out. But this belt maintains fai amout of stiffness, the efficiency does not drop much.
Sometimes I grind hard materials like ceramic tiles, granite, glass with this belt, it's working very well too.
My one complain is when sanding a little bit of gunky material like varnish or paint, belt is easily clogged and very hard to remove the clogged stuff. I wish manufacturer sells 10 or 20 pack to reduce the price.
More expensive belt may do better, but considering price and quality, this is the best so far.

Skil 7490-01 2.6 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Review

I bought this sander a couple of weeks ago and I have used it nearly everyday since. I've been building an end table and a couple of different mantle clocks and have given this sander a pretty good workout. The motor is plenty powerful and I haven't noticed any swirl marks even with the 80 grit paper. I have noticed that it is not entirely dustless since it will get some light dust gathering on the base of the tool but nothing floating in the air. For $40 I don't think you can go wrong with this tool.

I bought this because I needed a 5" sander to use with Microplane discs.I own a AEG 6" random orbit sander and wanted a low cost unit to try out the Microplane discs.This unit worked fine except for the dust collector.The dust collector falls off but I was able to get it to stay on with some tape.The bag is so thin that it actually had a hole in in from brushing agaist the surface I was sanding after about an hour of use.If you aren't concerned about dust collection, this unit is fine.

The power isn't there and the dust collection bag, which was aselling point for me originally, collects very little dust - maybe 20%, ifthat.What's worse, if you're not careful, the bag will just come rightoff because it's not securely fastened to the sander.

DELTA SA350K Shopmaster Boss 1/4-Horsepower 1,724 RPM Bench top Spindle Sander with Complete Spindle Sander Set Review

I tried to make my neighbor write his own review on the Delta spindle sander. But after watching him "type" I decided to assist him. Thought I was slow, jeeeezzz.
Anyway this is not my tool, but he is sitting here kibitzing as I type. I actually have the Jet JBOS5(see review).
He purchased the Delta because of the lighter weight and smaller size. He is space challenged in his shop (arn't we all) and needed one he could store under the bench when not in use. The Jet is a bit heavy to be lifting up and down a lot, so he went with the Delta.
He purchased this at our favorite local wood workers store and it was already assembled and clean.
First impression.....lots of plastic, of course that's why its light. The table is flat and has a nice finish, but if you lift the machine up using the table as a handle you would be smart to check for level before using the sander, it will move on ya.
The spindles are only 41/2" compared to 6" on the Jet. But you don't get to use the full length on either machine. He got a nice selection of drums with the sander, including the 3". They appear to be adequate to the task, ya gotta be gentle with the smaller diameter ones even on the Jet. Changing spindles is fairly easy.
You do have to clamp or bolt down the machine. Because of its light weight it tends to wander a bit around the bench if you don't. He drilled 4 holes in his bench top and use's bolts and wingnuts, works well.
We had to make an adapter to hook the dust collector up to this machine. Seems to work ok.
The 1/4 hp motor seems a little light to me, but it performs well, even as heavy handed as he is , he hasn't been able to stall the motor, though it does seem to bog down a little on deep pieces. Just needs a little lighter touch, these bench styles are not meant for "hogging". That's what bandsaws are for.
The sander is very quiet when running, and has very little vibration.
He thinks this sander will do the trick for him, until the day he has a "real" shop and can have a floor model. He recommends it for anyone who needs a lighter unit.
UPDATE...It is now February and my woodworking buddy has just brought his 3rd Boss home. The first two broke, after, in my opinion anyway, very little use. Both suffered from the same problem..a small plastic piece on the actuator arm broke, causing the up and down motion to stop working. The second one didn't line up with the hole in the insert very well, and was making growling noise's from the very beginning. He wants to try one more before giving up on the Boss. Will post another update after this one breaks. At least the store was willing to replace em with no hassel at all.
UPDATE..APRIL 05..The third boss was returned to the store..same problems...started "growling" after a couple days and after a couple weeks use the same plastic piece inside broke. My friend returned it and traded it in on the Jet spindle sander. Delta was willing to repair it or send him the parts needed, but he decided he would rather not have a machine that required repair every couple of months (or weeks). It's too bad, because when it works this little machine does a pretty good job, and because of it's light weight and smaller footprint, it is easy to move around the shop and stash under the bench. We don't know if it is a design flaw, bad choice of materials used in construction or just shoddy workmanship (maybe a little of all three), at any rate I think he gave the tool a real good chance to prove out and it didn't make the cut. Can't recommend this one.

Mouse Sander/Polisher (MS500CB) Review

I've been using the Mouse for a few years now and it has been one of the tools I reach for most.

It's so versatile! The triangular shape and smallish size makes sanding small areas very easy. You can also sand larger areas also, and get into smaller spaces than a larger sander. The Mouse is small, light, maneuverable, easy to handle, and it's also powerful and works very well! I use it for fixing and finishing furniture, but you can polish with it also (never tried it).

This is a user-friendly tool. Big and small hands will appreciate the size and weight of the Mouse.

My only gripes are the availability of the sanding pads, I just can't get 60-grit pads. I can get 80, 100, 150, and 220, but not 60, which would help in the stripping department. The other is the Velcro on the bottom of the sanding head started peeling off on the sides, requiring me to glue it back on.

Other than that, great tool!

Makita BO5021K Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander Review

Ok, so you've assembled your most recent work of handcrafted perfection, and now you've got to sand it.Your already dreading the tediously long job of blistering hand sanding and worried the next time you cough, a ball of "wooddough" is going to come up from your lungs.Well, sanding is certainly not one of the more pleasant aspects of masterpiece creation but unfortunately a necessity.Of course, if your family and guests have thick skin, particulary their backsides, then they won't mind sitting on birch fuzz or oak splinters.I on the other hand am only thick-headed (ask my family and friends).
The Makita BO5021 was the easy choice for a good random-orbit sander and random-orbit sanders are the clear choice for most finish sanding jobs.They are simply the most versatile of all sander designs, period.They can remove wood stock aggressively AND provide a smooth scratch free finish (an Achilles heel of orbit and belt sanders).Of course the finish depends on the grit of paper and sander model used.The Makita excels here.One of the leading woodworking magazines did a head to head comparison of a half dozen or so models using plexiglass as the sanding medium a year or two ago.Plexiglass was used so one could clearly see the degree of noticeable swirl using several grits.The BO5021 came out on top along with, I believe, the Porter Cable in smoothness. (Don't quote me here, unfortunately I had $40 worth of wood magazines stolen after loaning to a friend including this one and now?...I have a free subscription to American Woodworker.Hey what are friends for??)Similar tests were also done with softwood in pine to emphasize the swirl potential in a real world scenario.As smooth as the finish was found to be, it was surprising to find the Makita near the top for aggressive stock removal using heavier grit.The icing on the cake is that it comes with variable speed, unlike it's sibling theBO5010for unsurpassed control.A truly "do-all" sander.
Another pleasant feature of the Makita BO5021 is its dust removal system.With eight holes (vs. PC's five hole) sanding pad/disks the included dust bag performed very well, with little noticeable dust using 80 grit paper.Impressive!I've never hooked mine up to my vac for this reason, but I assume it would then function even better.PC's system works adequately but it is much easier to find eight-hole sanding disks than five-hole.More companies use the eight-hole disks including DeWalt, Bosch, Milwaukee, Hitachi, B&D and Skil.Which is better?You do the math, the major companies did.
Any downsides?Well yes, but they are petty arguments at best and may very well not bother others.It is my subjective opinion only, but I think the trigger length is a bit excessive.At nearly half the length of the handle, it feels a little awkward to me.I'm always afraid I'm going to accidently hit the trigger when I pick it up.I assume Makita designed it so those with more dainty hands could use two or even three fingers to pull the trigger, but this is perplexing as the pull is not unusually heavy.I suppose if you had REALLY large paws the larger trigger might be useful, but who has 2" thick fingers?The braking system inside the pad for stopping it from spinning once the trigger is released appears a little cheap.For now it works fine, but being made of plastic I wonder how long it will last.Maybe this is an unfounded worry.Only time will tell.
Note: My 5 star opinions are based on 5 being the best overall available at the time of review, taking into account a number of factors and not that the reviewed product is perfect.As said before, I've yet to find a "perfect tool".
